Looking for that special place to live?
This may very well be it!
El Hierro

You most likely know something about the Canary Islands but perhaps you don’t know much about El Hierro. That’s a good start because most other people don’t either. Without taking your breath away, our landscapes are often stunning. We have capricious badlands of cristalized lava, evergreen woods and pine forests, stark reminders of the force of nature in the form of hundreds of extinct volcanic cones, green valleys, huge amphitheatres a thousand metres high, sandy slopes, and blue skies …

Geographically we’re next door to Africa and you might think it could be as hot as the Sahara but the sea all around us guarantees we have one of the world’s most perfect climates for people to live in. And on the island we have everything we need: excellent telecommunications, good roads, a surprisingly good health service …

But we’re also fortunate in what we don’t have. Here there are no football hooligans, no noisy discotheques, no crowded beaches, no high-rise hotels, no polluting industry, no stress … You can’t deny it, we are about as far away as you can get but we’re technically still in Europe. Being out here doesn’t mean we’re stuck here. We have several daily flights to Tenerife and from there … to everywhere. Fast ferries too!

Everyone has a right to “get away from it all”. That’s what El Hierro is for. And if it’s a charming, quiet beauty that just makes you feel good, what more do you want? This is it!

Our Surroundings
Part of the village of El Pinar as seen from our vineyard.

The property is on the outskirts of the village of El Pinar in the sunny southeast of the island. On the edge of the pine forest and surrounded by almond trees, figs and vineyards. At 800 metres above sea level, the air is so clean you feel you can almost touch the stars at night.

Paste the coordinates 27.703164 – 17.977319 into the Google Earth search box and zoom in onto the house. Then try zooming out and travelling around to get an idea of the surroundings.

Pleasure boats at La Restinga

You can, of course, do it by car. From the airport and port it’s about 27 Km and from the capital Valverde 20 Km. La Restinga, a small seaside resort known internationally for its diving, is 13 Km away on the southernmost point of the island.

El Pinar has most basic services, shops and restaurants – unfortunately no Michelin stars yet – and our 24/7 health centre is just 300 metres from the house.

The Property & the House

If you’ve got this far, most likely you’re not looking for a pseudo-ranch or Roman villa, the categories the majority of stand-alone properties on the islands fall into. You’re probably one of those rare discerning persons that want a home to live in, whether permanently or for part of the year. This is it!

The "Sitio"

"Manacén" is the pre-conquest native language name of the property, perhaps meaning something like "overlooking the wheat fields". The property was originally a “sitio” – a homestead for an extended family.

The house itself has grown over generations in response to the environment and the family’s needs in a way that no architect could ever have imagined. We have honoured that tradition as we reconditioned the building to meet the requirements of modern living. Not without reason, for the combination of traditional materials gives a feeling of warmth and permanence while respect for the ancient layout provides “passive” air conditioning throughout the year.

The house is really three separate buildings: the main house, the «granny flat» and a studio. The main house consists of a sitting-room, bedroom, dormer, bathroom, kitchen, pantry, diningroom, porch, hall, a very sunny patio and a balcony. The kitchen is ample, and the dining room, dormer and sitting-room form a large open-plan area on two levels. The separate studio is entered through another trellised patio. The granny flat consists of a double bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and a toilet. Additionally there is a laundry.

The house with its garden of fruit trees and grapevines is classified as urban and so reforms and certain extensions are possible. The winery is on an adjacent plot, also urban, with other old constructions including an ancient bread oven in good working condition, two water cisterns … This plot is an excellent opportunity for an enterprising someone to renovate.

The very much larger area of vegetable gardens and vineyard towards the north on the other side of the house is classified as rural. It has been earmarked for the future expansion of the village and so one day it will become prime real estate. We realize you may not require such a large property and so we offer the three options given in the next section: Options & Prices
